History of the Barney Family

The Barney Family Historical Association is a non-profit family history society dedicated to preserving the heritage and history of the Barney Family throughout the world. Most researchers agree that the name BARNEY came from the small town of Berney (pronounced "Barney," and usually spelled Barney today) in Norfolk Co., England. Many have said the name is Norman, possibly derived from the norse BJARNE, meaning "Bear".

The Barney Family Historical Association, founded by William C. Barney in 1979, now has over 400 members, mostly in the United States and Canada, but also in Mexico, Colombia, Australia and England. The association publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Barney Family News, which averages 32 pages and is issued in March, June, September and December. In 1990, the association published the authoritative reference of Barney history and genealogy, the Genealogy of the Barney Family in America.

Genealogy of the Barney Family in America

This is the authoritative history of the Barney family in America, written by BFHA President William C. Barney and Eugene D. Preston. Mr. Preston conducted significant genealogical research on the Barney family from the early 1900s, when he was a student at Columbia Law School in New York City until his death in 1926, at which time he was the Assistant District Attorney of El Paso County, Colo. (Colorado springs). His notes, discovered by William C. Barney in the 1980s, were further refined and enhanced by newly discovered information in the intervening decades. The result is the most in-depth compilation of genealogy information on the American Barney family. A must-have addition to any Barney researcher's library. [Click here for large photo of book.]
